Why is teaching our children scripture important?

Scripture is so important for our children to learn. We need to equip them with spiritual guidance by teaching them His word! They need a reference whenever things get tough in their little lives, just like we do.

We want our kids to be able to come to us whenever they are experiencing hardships. However, we want them to run to the Father first! Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Tips for scripture memorization with kids  (of all ages)

  • include the context

What does this scripture mean? Why is it important? How can we apply this bible verse to our lives? Including these details make it easier for children to understand. Be sure to answer any questions they may have. Make sure to break it down in a way that will be easy for them to remember.

  • make it fun

Some examples may be to relate it to their favorite bible story or create a story involving your child. (Think Veggie Tales), throw in some rhyming words, make it into a song, make up a memory game, etc. Grab their attention!

  • adapt to their learning style

If your child is a visual learner, consider making fun flash cards to help them memorize scripture. If they are an auditory learner, consider putting on an video or making up a song with them to help them understand. If they are more hands on, try doing a fun relatable craft to get the verse to stick. & if one way doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to try something new! Catering to their learning style will make them much more eager to learn!

  • use repetition

Revisit and repeat these bible verses often! Don’t be afraid to go back and revisit past verses that you have already learned. Chances are if you only learn it for a week, you may not remember it 6 months later (think high school algebra). Yikes. Repetition is an easy and effective way to get important things to stick in your brain.

  • share your experience

Show your children how learning bibles verses is an important part of your life. For example, you could say something like: when I’m feeling lonely, I remember Exodus 33:13 and I know that I am never alone because God is always with me. Use these opportunities to witness to your children. Tell them of a time you used the word to help you through a certain event or handle your emotions. Show them how you apply scripture to your daily life and encourage them to do the same!

Our kids are imitators. They want to be like us. If you show your kids how you use bible verses in your daily life, they will likely be more willing to learn them. Demonstrate!
